At 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, a passenger van will leave the Brandywine Museum of Art with no more than 12 people on board. It goes to the Andrew Wyeth Studio and then to Brinton's Mill, the property that inspired Wyeth for more than four decades. The same trip runs again at 12:10 p.m. and 2:05 p.m. It runs only on Fridays, and the last one is Nov. 20.
As of Thursday, Oct. 22, that leaves five Fridays with three departures each, or 15 departures in all. At 12 seats per van, that's no more than 180 seats left this season, and some of those are already sold. Every other event between now and Thanksgiving week can be done on more days or by more people. So the best way to plan late fall in Chadds Ford is to pick a Friday first and build the rest of the season around it.
The Pumpkin Carve Is Done. The Tight Deadline Is Next.
The Chadds Ford Historical Society's Great Pumpkin Carve ran Oct. 15 through 17 with more than 70 giant pumpkins, and its parking was in the meadow next to the Society's grounds on Creek Road. That was the biggest event on the local fall calendar, but you could get in on three days with no seat limit. The Brinton's Mill tour has a seat limit.
The World of the Wyeths: The Brinton's Mill Experience is new this year. The Brandywine calls it the debut of "a new historic environment of the Chadds Ford region." The museum also says the site is expected to develop in future years with trails that connect it to the region through the Brandywine Conservancy. This fall's tours are the first public version of a site the museum expects to keep developing.
What the Ticket Covers
Before choosing a Friday, check whether the ticket fits your plans. Several of the rules are strict.
| Detail | What the Brandywine lists |
|---|---|
| Price | $25 for Brandywine members, $45 for non-members |
| Group size | 12 people per tour, advance reservations required |
| Length | About 90 minutes |
| Check-in | At the museum admissions desk at least 30 minutes before departure |
| Age | Children under 12 are not permitted |
| Refunds | Non-refundable, non-transferable and non-exchangeable unless the Brandywine cancels the tour |
| Included | All-day museum admission, guided Andrew Wyeth Studio tour, van transportation |
| At the mill | Inside the restored Granary. The mill and house are toured from outside |
The Granary was the Wyeths' first home on the property and later served as a studio. It's the one building at the mill you go inside. Unless the Brandywine cancels a tour, for example because of severe weather, tickets can't be refunded or exchanged, so choose a Friday you're sure you can make.
All-day museum admission lets you pair the tour with the Brandywine's current exhibition, By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth, which looks at Betsy Wyeth's design work and her creative partnership with Andrew Wyeth, with particular attention to Brinton's Mill. One ticket gets you the mill grounds in the morning and the museum's exhibition about the same place in the afternoon.
Five Fridays, Each With a Different Plan
Each remaining Friday falls next to a different event, and only a few of those events overlap the tour dates.
- Friday, Oct. 23. This is the only Friday when the tour and a free evening event fall on the same day. Chaddsford Winery hosts "Uncorking the Paranormal: Talk & Treats" from 6 to 9 p.m. at 632 Baltimore Pike. Admission is free and registration isn't required, but food and drinks cost extra. The 2:05 p.m. tour ends around mid-afternoon, which leaves time before the talk starts.
- Friday, Oct. 30. This is the last Friday that overlaps the winery's "Adult Trick or Treat." That event ends Sunday, Nov. 1, and its Friday sessions run from 4 to 8 p.m.
- Friday, Nov. 6. The next afternoon, Brandywine Battlefield Park holds a Flag Retirement Ceremony.
- Friday, Nov. 13. The next day at noon, the Battlefield's 250th Revolutionary Speaker Series hosts historian Don N. Hagist.
- Friday, Nov. 20. This is the last tour, and it falls on the second day of the Brandywine's Critter Sale.
Each of those other events also has its own deadline or detail worth knowing, covered below.
The Winery's Season Ends First
Adult Trick or Treat at Chaddsford Winery is for ages 21 and up and requires advance reservations. Regular tickets and dietary-restriction tickets are $45 plus tax and fees. Non-alcoholic tickets are $38 plus tax and fees. The winery says Friday evenings and later Saturday sessions are new this year. Saturday sessions run noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday sessions run 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The added Friday evenings are why the winery fits so well with the tour. A Friday afternoon at the mill and a Friday evening a short drive down Baltimore Pike works on Oct. 23 or Oct. 30. After Nov. 1, it doesn't. The winery's calendar didn't show any events after that date at the time of writing.
Two Saturdays at the Battlefield
Once the winery's season ends, Brandywine Battlefield Park at 1491 Baltimore Pike holds the next two weekends.
On Saturday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 3 p.m., the park hosts a Flag Retirement Ceremony. Attendees can bring worn American flags to be retired. It's a one-hour event the day after the Nov. 6 tour.
On Saturday, Nov. 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m., the 250th Revolutionary Speaker Series features Don N. Hagist. He is managing editor of the Journal of the American Revolution, and his book Noble Volunteers draws on archival records and firsthand accounts to show who the British soldiers who served in America were: their backgrounds, training, daily routines and what became of them after the war. Tickets are sold through the park's booking page.
The Nov. 13 tour and the Nov. 14 talk cover very different history about four miles of Baltimore Pike apart. One is the 20th-century property where the Wyeths lived and worked. The other is the British side of the Revolution, told at the battlefield it was fought on.
The Last Week Has Two Events at Once
The final tour falls in the same week as the Brandywine's annual Critter Sale, which runs Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 19 to 22. ChaddsFordLive reports that this year's sale is back in person at the Brandywine Museum of Art. Volunteers make thousands of ornaments and tabletop decorations from all-natural materials. Prices run from $10 to $35, with specialty pieces from $50 to $250, and the sale is credit card only.
The sale opens on Thursday, the day before the last Brinton's Mill departures. Someone holding a Nov. 20 tour ticket will already be at the museum with all-day admission while the sale is on. That makes the final Friday the busiest day of the season at the Brandywine.
"Each Critter has its own unique personality and expression — no two are exactly the same."
ChaddsFordLive's description of the sale also points to a practical issue. Because every piece is one of a kind, the selection shrinks as the four days go on, so Thursday and Friday shoppers see the most choices.
If You Miss Every Friday
By Design stays open through Jan. 10, 2027, about seven weeks after the last van trip. The exhibition doesn't replace standing inside the Granary or walking the mill race, but it covers Brinton's Mill through Betsy Wyeth's design work. It's also open on any day the museum is, not only on Fridays.
Here is the full calendar from this Thursday on.
